Just a word about goals: A goal is like a guide post to a better version of yourself. Think of this ‘best version of yourself’ as like the North Star. This is the direction you ought to be heading. But along the way you get a bit lost. You exercise less, you eat a bit worse, you treat your partner a bit less kindly, and on and on – in other words, you lose your way.
So in moments of clarity, or times like the new year (or maybe a birthday, etc.) we can course correct a bit.
There are obvious examples of goals/resolutions that point us in the right direction: think – ‘when I get home from work, I am going to turn off my phone until the kids are in bed.’ Great! But what about running a 50k trail race. This one could actually go both ways. So you really have to ask yourself if this is the right goal that will point you to your North Star. (For example, I had a runner come to me to train for a 50k trail race that was supposed to be like 6 weeks after their baby was meant to be born. After a discussion with me, and with his wife – he found a 50k that was schedule a few months before the baby was due.)
